A Culinary Diploma
One of the advantages of earning a culinary diploma is that you will be exposed to the many different aspects of a food business. Of course you will learn a lot about cooking, using fresh and interesting ingredients in creative ways, and making excellent dishes. You will also learn a lot about the business as well. It is important to know about the cost of food and beverages and how to keep these under control. If you are thinking about opening a restaurant yourself in the future, you will need to understand what makes a good location, and how do you know if you are paying too much for a lease and for rent?
Many restaurants end up closing their doors, even if they offer excellent meals, because they were doomed before they even opened by having a cost structure that was too high.
The point is that there are so many aspects to the food and beverage industry that you will be making career choices as time goes on. You need to develop good self-evaluation skills in order to really know what you are good at, be it creating pastries, preparing catering entrees, or personnel management. Look for a job in an area where you have good strengths, but be aware that there are other critical aspects of any operation, and the larger the business the more roles there are.
The key is to get hired and get started preferably in the area where you have the most skills and interest, based on what you have done in culinary school, but also what your previous background was. Then work hard and establish yourself as an experienced member of the team. After that you can keep your eyes open to other parts of the operation and determine if any of those have particular interest for you. If so you can make friends with the people involved and then have opportunities to ask them about their work and what they like and dislike about it. If you do decide that another part of the food industry has appeal for you, you’ll have a much better chance to be the one chosen to fill the position if you know some of the people already working there.
